Together with Stephen Shore & William Eggleston, Joel Sternfeld has put fine art color photography on the map in the early 70’s.

A couple of days ago I visited foam.org in Amsterdam which currently is portraying some 100+ Joel Sternfeld images, as such covering his work since 1970 and on. While his early work is interesting to see and enables you to put his later work into perspective, it’s the images from ‘American Prospects’ & ‘Stranger Passing’ which really overwhelmed me last week. Large-scale work with the subjects mostly looking directly in the lens or simply presenting typical overviews of the ordinary American life.  Joel Sternfeld has carefully investigated the American suburbs in the 70’s & 80’s and the results are simply astonishing.

If you’ re in Amsterdam in the coming weeks, between your stop at the coffee shop & what-do-I-know-else, make sure not to miss this unique exhibition.

The deepest ‘blue’.

Some 20 years ago I was at a party were The Scene played a fantastic gig in a big tent. Suddenly a gust of wind swept the tent a couple of hundred meters away. Result: several severe injuries and one fatal casualty.

I asked Thé whether he remembered this. He did.
