A decade of urbex

with 3 comments

I started my urbex journey somewhere in 2003, inaugurated by lab-wan (google him). That’s nearly a decade …

While these days it seems like everybody is doing the thing, there was indeed a time, when film was still king and this type of photography was only set aside for the happy few out there. A lot has changed since then; Digital came in and consequently the mindset of new, young digital photogs has shifted to ‘easy’ urbex and nowadays everybody is in a complete rush in getting as many locations as possible, overcrowding their pics with HDR and other nifty stuff, while at the same time sales & trading have become the new kings.

While I still get the chills when visiting & capturing these places, I feel that the real relish is slowly disappearing. I grieve in silence.

2003 was the year that S.A.F.E.A still existed. Together with lab-wan I visited it numerous times, including during freezing cold winter nights while the complete site was covered in snow. Everytime, slowly, discovering a new unrevealed part of the site. No rush. Only slow delight. And then one day it was gone. Demolished to the ground.

The real relish is slowly disappearing. Hopefully the appetite will return.

In the mean time, an image that most of you know already for a long time (so re-read the previous paragraphs), but above all a pic which visualizes the last time I experienced God.
